Pressemitteilung Nr. 049 vom 15.03.2019 Bavarian State Minister of the Arts Sibler on the death of Okwui Enwezor - "We have lost a brilliant intellectual and a sensitive patron of the arts, to whom artists, museums and art lovers owe a lot"

MUNICH. Bavarian State Minister of the Arts Bernd Sibler was deeply moved by the reports that the former director of Munich’s Haus der Kunst Okwui Enwezor has died today. „We have lost a brilliant intellectual, a highly educated cosmopolitan and a sensitive patron of the arts, to whom artists, museums and art lovers owe a lot”, stressed Sibler.

“Okwui Enwezor brought further international acclaim to Munich and Bavaria as locations for art and culture. This achievement relied on his high global expectations on exhibition programs and his extraordinary curatorial expertise”, added the Bavarian State Minister of the Arts. “I am very grateful that Okwui Enwezor broadened our horizons with his team from the Haus der Kunst and that he presented his ideas and visions here in Bavaria.”

His farewell gift: the recently opened exhibition „El Anatsui. Triumphant Scale“

Okwui Enwezor was director of Munich’s Haus der Kunst from 2011 to 2018. Due to health reasons he resigned from his duties at the Haus der Kunst in June 2018. “The recently opened exhibition ‘El Anatsui. Triumphant Scale‘ speaks for itself. It can be called a farewell gift to Munich and Bavaria, to an international audience and to experts”, added Bavaria’s Minister of the Arts.
